The web project “Architectonic Heritage of Lido, from Liberty Style to the Fifties” is the demonstration of a great commitment which has involved the entire Municipality of Lido since its creation in 2001. The project, commissioned in 2003 by the General Direction of the City of Venice, has also engaged some volunteers of the National Civil Service, under the guidance of the Municipal offices.

The project is born from the consciousness of the importance to overcome the idea of the Lido of Venice uniquely as the smart beach of Venice and seat of theVeniceFilm Festival and not for its natural and architectonic beauties. A heritage arisen in the period of the island’s highest magnificence, when Lido became the most famous bathing resort in Europe. Liberty was then the dominating style, freely interpreted and mixed with neo byzantine, neo romanesque, neo gothic and eclectic styles.

More than 250 buildings have been catalogued and described, thanks to the cooperation with the Superintendency forHistorical and Architectonic Heritage of Venice, the City Historical Archive, the University Ca’ Foscari and the University of Architecture/IUAV, on the basis of a study made by the City Planning Department.

The visitor will be able to admire numerous villas and hotels still preserving the unaltered charm of past times. Villa Elisa, Villa Igea, Villa Bianca, Villa Margherita, Villa Eva, Hungaria Palace Hotel, the celebrate Grand Hotel Des Bains and Grand Hotel Excelsior are some ofthe masterpieces of famous architects as Torres, Perez, Corrado and Del Giudice. A project that will be enlarged subsequently with the description of the natural and environmental heritage and the collection of documents of the local cultural history of Lido and Pellestrina islands.

We hope that this work will be appreciated and used to foster dialogue between the users and the Municipality through the knowledge of the territory. The archive is in fact open to integrations, corrections and suggestions.

The web site content can be searched by different modalities: by an interactive map; by the sections places and architectures and itineraries; by the list of the buildings or by the main actors, commissioners and planners, (or, as soon as the research is sufficiently completed,by the name of whom took part in the construction operatively) or by the internal search engine.
