The Consiglio Comunale (City Council) of Venice is composed of the Lord Mayor and 46 Consiglieri comunali (city councillors). The administrative elections took place during the elections of April 16^th and 30^th 2000. The duration of the mandate is 5 years.

The Council is the organ of address and political-administrative control of the Commune. It approves the basic acts of local policy and defines its objectives, which the City Council board must implement. It has functional and administrative autonomy which is exercised with legal regulations that establish the methods through which the services, facilities, financial and structural resources are supplied.

The activities of the city council take place in the City Council office and within appropriate Commissioni consiliari (councillor commissions), which have preliminary investigative, reference and control functions.

The City Council convenes and is presided over by the Presidente del Consiglio (Chairman of the Council). The meetings are open to the public and usually take place, by law on Monday afternoon at the Ca’ Loredan room (S. Marco 4136).

Commission meetings, except in exceptional circumstances, are public and take place in the councillor rooms of Ca’ Farsetti or the Mestre Town Hall (via Palazzo 1). The Councillors are composed of Gruppi consiliari (Council groups) who in turn elect a Group Leader. The Conference of the Group Leaders works with the Chairman of the Council in planning and organising the work of the Council.

The Councillors have the right of initiative to present proposals of resolutions, which deal with the issues of competence to the City council established by law. They have the right to interrogate and question the Lord Mayor and the councillors.
They can present mozioni (motions) to the Lord Mayor and the City Council board to promote a debate in Council on a specific issue.
In the Council they can approve ordini del giorno (agendas).
They have the right to obtain all the information useful for carrying out their mandate from city council offices, companies and participating bodies.
